2023 Africa Cup of Nations moved to 2024

Due to concerns about weather conditions during the summer, Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe stated that the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in January and February of 2024 rather than the summer of 2023. Motsepe made the comments in the Moroccan capital of Rabat this weekend and cited the rainy season in host country Ivory Coast as the reason for the postponement.

Originally set to take place during the summer of 2023, Motsepe stated that no chances can be taken with having the continent’s showpiece competition be at the mercy of the weather. Due to the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup’s unusual November-December scheduling in Qatar later this year, the AFCON will be postponed to early 2024 rather than pushed up to early 2023.
