Nigeria superstar forward Asisat Oshoala is set for a return to Spain for treatment on her knee and is ruled out for the remainder of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations. Oshoala was on the wrong end of a strong tackle in Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to South Africa on Monday and suffered a Grade 2 Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) sprain in her knee according to a social media statement from the Nigeria Football Federation. The Super Falcons will have to get their WAFCON campaign back on track without the FC Barcelona Femení star who has won three of the last five African Women’s Footballer of the Year awards.
Nigeria face Botswana next in Group C play on Thursday before closing out the group stage with a matchup against Burundi. The Super Falcons have won eleven out of the thirteen WAFCON competitions that have been staged since the inaugural edition in 1991 and have won the last three editions.
