Libya Premier League: Tripoli rivals Al-Ittihad and Al Ahli tied at top after three games in Championship phase

The Championship Stage of the 2021-22 Libyan Premier League is in the final stretch with each of the six participating teams having two more fixtures left to play following Wednesday’s action, and it is Tripoli rivals Al Ahli and Al-Ittihad who are at the top after three games played. Both teams are tied on seven points after earning victories, setting up a derby encounter on Sunday that will likely determine who wins the league.

Al-Ittihad defeated Al Akhdar 2-1, coming back from conceding a goal just before halftime to surge back and earn three crucial points. Ahmed Karoua opened the scoring for Akhdar, finishing off a well placed lofted pass after a free kick was blocked by the Ittihad wall but Anas Al-Misrati leveled the match for Ittihad before the hour mark with a volley off a cross from the left wing. Former Raja Casablanca center back Sanad Al-Warfali gave Ittihad the victory from the penalty spot after the Video Assistant Referee determined a foul had been committed in the penalty area by Akhdar.

Al Ahli Tripoli won their matchup 1-0 and are ahead of rivals Ittihad in the standings due to having scored more goals. Mohamed Abu Zreik scored the winner in the 70th minute with an excellent finish, lifting his shot over the Al Ahly Benghazi keeper after a through ball from midfield put him in on the left wing. Olympic Azzaweya defeated Al Nasr 1-0 in the league’s other match on Wednesday.

Highlights from the Al Ahli and Al-Ittihad victories are below.

Al Akhdar 1-2 Al-Ittihad
