The second round of fixtures in Group A took place at the 2022 COSAFA U-20 Championship on Sunday as the competition continued in Eswatini. Group favorites Zambia took firm control of affairs following a 2-0 victory over the hosts, leaving the young Copper Bullets on a perfect six points and three points ahead of both Eswatini and Botswana.
Emmanuel Mukosha finished off a brilliant and quick attacking movement from the Zambians to open the scoring, slamming home his shot in the 38th minute after receiving a cross from the day’s standout player Prince Mumba. Lombe Mutale completed the scoring with a goal in the second half, leaving Eswatini needing a victory against last placed Mauritius to have a chance of advancing from the group.
Botswana brought themselves back into the hunt for a spot in the knockout stages by defeating Mauritius 1-0. Botshelo Motsheja headed in a free kick from out wide to give his team the lead in the first half and now Botswana are tied on three points with Eswatini, holding a slight edge in goal difference. The best second place team from all the groups will join the three first place finishers in the semifinals, meaning Botswana will likely need a win against Zambia in their final Group A match.
