The final day of the group stage at the 2022 COSAFA Men’s U-20 Championship on Wednesday saw all the teams of Groups B and C display the urgency needed to clinch a semifinal spot. The real drama was to be had in Group C where Comoros were the leaders heading into the final day until they ran into a determined South Africa side. Amajita not only took first place but denied their opponents a historic achievement by eliminating them with a 4-0 victory. Malawi defeated Namibia 5-2 so that they were even with South Africa and Comoros on six points but South Africa took the top spot by virtue of a +5 goal difference to Malawi’s +3 and Comoros’ -1.
Malawi finished in second but it was not enough to advance as the best second placed side as Angola snatched that position on the final day in Group B play. The Angolan team came out looking to score as many goals as possible against minnows Seychelles to boost their goal difference and an 8-1 thrashing was more than enough, leaving them on six points but with a +11 difference to surpass Malawi and hosts Eswatini who also had six points. Angola joins Group B winners Mozambique, who defeated Lesotho 2-1, as well as South Africa and Group A winners Zambia in the semifinals.
