FIFA U-17 WWC: Nigeria and Morocco bounce back with comfortable victories

After disappointing results on their debuts at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup earlier this week both Nigeria and Morocco took advantage of more favorable matchups to each earn three points on Friday. The Flamingoes of Nigeria dominated from beginning to end against New Zealand, winning 4-0 to spring into second place to set up a crucial match against Chile to determine who will join Germany in advancing out of Group B. Amina Bello’s headed goal in the 16th minute got the scoring started for the Flamingoes before Miracle Usnai’s second goal of the competition put the match away by halftime.

Later on Morocco turned in an excellent second half, where the Lionesses scored all of their goals in a 3-0 win over hosts India, keeping them in contention to reach the knockout stages. Doha El Madani took advantage of an unfortunate handball committed by India in their penalty area, sending her spot kick into the goal to give Morocco the lead in the 51st minute. Goals from Yasmine Zouhir and Djennah Cherif finished off the victory for Morocco, who will need to win a difficult matchup against the United States on Monday to advance out of Group A.

Highlights are below from both games involving African teams on Friday.

Highlights

Nigeria 4-0 New Zealand

India 0-3 Morocco
