Newly promoted Egyptian Premier League club El Dakhlya and its supporters knew life in Egypt’s top division was going to be difficult and newly crowned Egyptian Super Cup winners Al Ahly showed their hosts why on Wednesday in a dominant 4-1 victory. Egypt national team members Mohamed Sherif and Hamdi Fathi scored in the opening six minutes to put Ahly ahead for a lead they would not relinquish. Funom Alfred responded in the 13th minute for Dakhlya but that was as close as the hosts got before Afsha set up Karim Fouad twice early in the second half to put Ahly out of reach.
It has been an excellent week for Ahly supporters, who also got to see their rivals Zamalek stumble later on Wednesday. Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” appeared to do enough to secure a victory for the reigning Premier League champions with a penalty kick conversion just before halftime but hosts ENPPI rallied with an impressive second half performance before Ahmed Kalosha equalized in the 84th minute. Ibrahim left Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad motionless with a perfect header from a corner kick for ENPPI to split the points with the champions. The bad luck continued for Zamalek after team leader and playmaker Shikabala was forced off with what appeared to be an arm injury.
