CAF Women’s Champions League: Mamelodi Sundowns seal first place in Group B with thrashing of Wadi Degla

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies joined host club and Group A winners ASFAR in the semifinals of the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League after defeating Egypt’s Wadi Degla 5-0 on Thursday, clinching top spot in Group B for the reigning CAFWCL champions. It appears that the South African club will be joined by Nigerian club Bayelsa Queens following their 2-0 victory over DR Congo’s TP Mazembe. Bayelsa are even with Mazembe on three points after two games but the Congolese club will need to earn at least a point against Sundowns to advance.

Sundowns dominated throughout with Lelona Daweti opening the scoring in the 10th minute before Melinda Kgadiete doubled the lead with a close range finish in the 25th minute. Bambanani Mbane scored twice in the second half including on a powerful free kick strike in the 60th minute and Boitumelo Rabale rounded out the list of goal scorers for Sundowns, who continue to establish themselves as the club to beat in Morocco.

Bayelsa Queens earned a crucial victory, bouncing back from an opening match defeat to Sundowns with their victory over Mazembe. A penalty kick was awarded in Bayelsa’s favor within a minute of the kick off which Ogoma Joseph dispatched just past Mazembe goalkeeper Brigitte Ngamita. The Nigerian club continued to get behind Mazembe’s defense with quick breaks and extended their lead for good in the 24th minute through Grace Chinyere, who cleaned up her own rebound after an initial shot was saved by Ngamita.

Highlights from both of Thursday’s games are below.
