CAFCL: Angolan champions Petro de Luanda frustrated by stubborn JS Kabylie in Group A opener

Petro de Luanda supporters will be disappointed with their team’s start to the 2022-23 CAF Champions League group stage with Os Petroliferos failing to make a breakthrough in their 0-0 home draw against Algeria’s JS Kabylie. The Algerian club kept a prolific Petro attack scoreless and will be pleased at taking a point back to Algeria where they will face reigning African and Moroccan champions Wydad AC in their second match. Petro are set for a difficult away match at Congolese side AS Vita Club next weekend in their second fixture.

It was clear early on that JSK were going to play defensively and it was up to the hosts to break them down. However the Angolan champions struggled to create opportunities with all two of their shots on target arriving in the first half. In the 32nd minute Petro forward Yano produced good work on the left flank but his cross just missed striking partner Tiago Azulão’s attempt at a diving header.

Anderson Cruz tested JSK goalkeeper Aberrahmane Medjadel in the 39th minute with a low shot from distance but the former Paradou AC player handled the effort without trouble. JSK were able to create a couple of chances on the break, their best opportunity arriving in the 67th minute when Petro central defender Kinito fell over while playing a routine ball but Dadi Mouaki sent his shot far off target. Kinito came close for Petro late on but sent his header wide from a corner kick with Medjadel out of position to sum up a frustrating match for the hosts.

Highlights of the Group A clash are below.
