The second matchday of the 2022-23 CAF Confederation Cup group stage took place on Sunday with a couple of teams making statements and only one team claiming a victory on the road. Tanzanian champions Young Africans came through to give Dar es Salaam something to cheer about with a 3-1 victory over DR Congo’s TP Mazembe. Kennedy Musonda and Mudathir Yahya scored in the opening eleven minutes for the hosts as Yanga held off a second half charge from the Ravens. Yanga and Mazembe are tied for second place in Group D on three points, a point behind Tunisia’s US Monastir who drew 1-1 in Mali against Real Bamako.

Morocco’s ASFAR went down early to visitors ASKO Kara of Togo but the Black Army stormed back to level the match before halftime and dominated the second half on their way to a 5-1 victory. The Royal Army club are in first place in Group C on four points, two points ahead of Pyramids FC and Future FC after an all-Egyptian matchup ended 1-1.

The only road victory came from the surprise team in the group stage so far, South Africa’s Marumo Gallants, who once again got on the front foot for a 2-1 victory in DR Congo against Saint-Éloi Lupopo. The team currently sitting dead last in the DStv Premiership are perfect through two matches in Group A but have two difficult tests coming up against USM Alger who drew Libya’s Al Akhdar and are in second place on four points.

Nigeria’s Rivers United were clinical against Ivorian champions ASEC Mimosas in their 3-0 home victory, moving into second place in Group B. The Pride of Rivers State are a point behind Republic of Congo’s Diables Noirs who played DR Congo’s DC Motema Pembe to a scoreless draw at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.
