2023 AFCON Qualifying Group B: Burkina Faso win it late, Cape Verde held by Eswatini

Burkina Faso’s lead at the top of Group B is now four points after Les Étalons found a late goal from substitute Abdoul Tapsoba to defeat Togo 1-0 on Friday. Tapsoba’s 87th minute match winner came after an evenly fought duel that saw Togo threaten the goal on several occasions but once again come up short of a positive result. In Group B’s other match earlier on Friday, Cape Verde were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Eswatini.

Togo needed a result and went for the victory in Agadir, Morocco, the host location for Burkina Faso’s home fixtures. A couple of opportunities arrived for the Togolese team in the opening twenty-five minutes but Burkina Faso central defender Issoufou Dayo made a couple of important interventions.

The Stallions showed more ambition in the second half and were more threatening in the final twenty minutes, resulting in Tapsoba’s goal late on after Togolese goalkeeper Wassiou Ouro-Gneni spilled a corner kick and the Sheriff Tiraspol forward followed up to head in after an initial shot was blocked. In the other match, Cape Verde controlled play but could not find a way past the Eswatini defense which continues to prove difficult to break down.

Highlights from Burkina Faso’s victory are below.

Burkina Faso 1-0 Togo

Cape Verde 0-0 Eswatini
