Angolan champions Petro de Luanda finished their disappointing 2022-23 CAF Champions League campaign with Saturday’s 1-0 victory over DR Congo’s AS Vita Club at the Estádio 11 de Novembro. Jaredi Teixeira’s excellent free kick in the first half gave Petro seven points from six matches in Group A, enough for last season’s semifinalists to finish in third position. VClub, who finish in last place with four points, are eliminated from the competition along with Petro.
The hosts were in control throughout the match and poor finishing prevented Petro from winning by a larger margin. After an early spell of dominance Os Tricolores snatched the lead in the 15th minute. Following a foul outside the VClub penalty area, Petro winger Jaredi sent a curling free kick that dipped beyond the reach of Junior Dande’s dive in the VClub goal.
VClub took more risks beginning towards the end of the first half but Petro keeper Hugo Marques did not have too much to do. Dominance of possession continued to restrict opportunities for the visitors and Petro held on for a comfortable victory despite lacking efficiency on their chances.
