CAFCL: Sundowns celebrate domestic title with victory over Coton Sport

The good news continued to arrive for Mamelodi Sundowns supporters on Saturday, who celebrated the confirmation of another DStv Premiership title as well as top spot in Group B of the CAF Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Cameroonian club Coton Sport. An own goal gave Sundowns the lead before halftime and Abubeker Nassir returned from a long injury layoff to score the second as the South African champions finish with fourteen points from six matches in Group B. Coton Sport end their group stage campaign without a single point and a -13 goal differential.

Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena sent out a mix of regulars and rotation players at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium which saw few opportunities in the first half. However with halftime approaching it was the hosts who took the lead when left back Terrence Mashego got free on the flank and his cross was redirected into the goal by Coton Sport defender Marie Sylvestre Mekong.

Coton Sport had some moments when the visitors were able to counter attack but Sundowns continued to dominate the ball in the second half. Mekong nearly pulled the Cameroonian club level in the 66th minute but his ambitious shot attempt hit the post and went wide with Sundowns goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse scrambling.

The hosts would extend their lead late on when a quick counter attack led to Thabiso Kutumela’s pass sending fellow substitute Nassir through on goal where the Ethiopia national team forward made no mistake with his finish past keeper Jean Nyeck. Coton Sport found a consolation in the final seconds when Che Malone set up substitute Moshood Kasali for a hard shot past Pieterse but the mood was not dampened for Sundowns supporters who know their team will be champions of South Africa once again after SuperSport United’s draw earlier in the day.
