The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) continued on with its twelfth round over the weekend, highlighted by a clash between two clubs from the country’s south in Akwa United and Enyimba FC. Akwa emerged victorious by a 1-0 score at the Godwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo with a second half goal from Uche Collins. Collins sent a rocket of a header past Enyimba goalkeeper Sabirou Bassa-Djeri to stretch Akwa’s unbeaten run to seven matches and move the club into second place in Group A.
Group A drew further headlines on Sunday when the match officials refused to come out for the second half of a clash between Remo Stars and Gombe United, claiming they were attacked during the halftime break. The NPFL’s Interim Management Committee vowed to investigate the incident in a match that ended 0-0 after it was rescheduled and played on Monday. Group leaders Bendel Insurance remain four points ahead of Akwa and five ahead of Remo Stars following a 1-1 draw at fourth placed Plateau United.
In Group B, Lobi Stars moved a point ahead of CAF Confederation Cup participants Rivers United at the top of the log with a 1-1 draw at Enugu Rangers. Newly promoted sides Doma United and Bayelsa United enjoyed home victories with Doma’s 2-1 result over Niger Tornadoes moving them past their opponents to third place, where they trail Lobi Stars by a point. Only three points separate leaders Lobi Stars from sixth place Sunshine Stars in a tight group where only three teams will advance to the final stage.
