Coupe du Trône: FUS defeat Rabat rivals ASFAR, advance to semifinals

A match between the top clubs from the capital of Rabat began the quarterfinal round of Morocco’s Coupe du Trône on Saturday and Fath Union Sport edged rivals ASFAR by a 1-0 score at the Stade Moulay Abdallah. Ayoub Nanah scored the only goal of the match in the fifteenth minute to qualify FUS for the semifinals where they will face the winner between RS Berkane and fourth division side Chabab Houara.

Following a busy spell of matches in April and early May, current Botola Pro leaders ASFAR finally received a week of rest before their latest match but the Royal Army club looked fatigued on Saturday. FUS took the initiative and were rewarded for their attacking mentality with an early goal. Left winger Youssef Belammari received a pass and got to the end line for a low cross to Nanah, who took a touch past an ASFAR defender before placing an excellent finish past Mohamed Baayou in goal.

ASFAR woke up after conceding early and applied pressure to the FUS defense. Hamza Igmane fired just wide after receiving a cross from Emmanuel Imanishimwe and ASFAR came close with a couple of set pieces. However despite a strong push from ASFAR in the second half it was FUS who emerged with the victory. The teams will meet again in the Botola Pro in sixteen days after ASFAR participates in the final preliminary round of qualifying for the Arab Club Champions Cup.

Video of Nanah’s goal is below.
