The Flying Eagles of Nigeria are through to the knockout stage of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina following Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Italy in Group D. Salem Fago Lawal opened the scoring for Nigeria around the hour mark and Jude Sunday confirmed three points with his late finish in second half stoppage time. Nigeria, who are now the group leaders, have one more group stage match against Brazil on Saturday and could drop down to third place with a defeat but are guaranteed to finish as one of the best third placed teams even if the worst case scenario occurs.
In the other match involving an African team on Wednesday, Senegal came back to draw Israel 1-1 in Group C. Israel took the lead on a Babacar Ndiaye own goal in the 58th minute but the Senegalese dominated the final thirty minutes and found an equalizer through Pape Demba in the 80th minute. Senegal remain in fourth place in a difficult Group C and have one more match against Colombia that Les Lionceaux will likely need to win in order to advance.
