After a long title race that saw plenty of twists and changes in the final weeks, Medeama Sporting Club are the champions of the Ghana Premier League for the first time in their history after the Mauve and Yellow defeated Tamale City by a 3-0 score in Sunday’s final round. Jonathan Sowah scored twice in the second half after Joshua Agyemang put the club from Tarkwa up inside the opening ten minutes to leave little doubt for the club’s supporters. Medeama are the first club from Ghana’s Western Region to win the top division title since Sekondi Hasaacas FC won it in 1977.
While Medeama supporters are celebrating, fans of Aduana FC are wondering where it all went wrong even as the Bono Region club won 1-0 against Bechem United on Sunday. After being the leaders for the majority of the campaign, Ogya endured a miserable May that saw the club fail to win with three losses from five matches as their collapse paved the way for Medeama to triumph.
It was also a disappointing season to say the least for supporters of Ghanaian powerhouses Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko. Concerns that Hearts might be relegated were overblown as the Phobians drew 0-0 at Berekum Chelsea on Sunday but defeats in six of their last eight matches are a major source of anger for passionate supporters of the Accra club. The sentiments are the same for Kotoko supporters who watched their club struggle to find the net once again in a scoreless draw against Dreams FC, leaving the Kumasi giants in fourth place with title hopes long extinguished.
Highlights from Medeama’s title-clinching victory are below followed by the trophy presentation and comments from head coach Evans Adotey after the list of scores from Sunday.
