Edmund Addo moves to Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade

The club career of Ghanaian central midfielder Edmund Addo continued its steady progression this week after the 23-year-old completed his latest move to top Serbian club Red Star Belgrade from FK Spartak Subotica. Addo signed a four-year deal with the club from the Serbian capital and will join fellow Ghana national team member Osman Bukari. Red Star will attempt to fulfill aspirations of competing in the group stage of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League after securing a sixth consecutive domestic title.

Addo was set to join Red Star before the 2022-23 season but instead joined Spartak after the transfer to Red Star collapsed. He made sixteen appearances for Spartak after joining from Moldovan club champions Sheriff Tiraspol to help the club avoid relegation from the Serbian SuperLiga with a tenth place finish.

Previously, Addo boosted his reputation and earned his first call up to the Ghana national team by helping Sheriff Tiraspol reach the group stage of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League after joining from Slovakian club FK Senica. Sheriff opened the group stage with a home victory over Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk before stunning eventual champions Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory in Spain.

Less than two months after playing the full ninety minutes of Sheriff’s victory over Real Madrid, Addo made his senior national team debut for the Black Stars in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Ethiopia. Addo now has ten appearances for Ghana including two starts in Ghana’s recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Angola. A native of the Greater Accra Region, Addo began his career with Ghanaian colt club Mighty Cosmos FC which is affiliated with Addo’s agent Oliver Arthur and has produced famous Ghanaian players Stephen Appiah and Michael Essien.
