Transfer to Qatari football confirmed for former Al Ahly midfielder Fathi

After nine seasons in the Egyptian Premier League, Egypt national team midfielder Hamdi Fathi is off to the Middle East after signing a contract with Qatar Stars League club Al-Wakrah FC. The move was rumored for a couple of weeks and Al-Wakrah confirmed the completion of the transfer on Tuesday. The 28-year-old joins pending a successful physical after Al-Wakrah paid a fee to Al Ahly reported at just under €3 million.

Fathi joined Ahly before the 2018-19 season after a successful spell at ENPPI and his role gradually progressed with The Red Devils. He made 114 appearances for Ahly over four seasons and scored 8 goals while winning three CAF Champions League titles, two trophies each in the Egyptian Premier League and Egypt Cup as well as three Egyptian Super Cup titles and two CAF Super Cup triumphs.

The veteran central midfielder has also made 29 appearances for the Egypt national team, scoring two goals in 2019 friendly matches against Botswana and Liberia. Fathi is also set to compete in continental football after Al-Wakrah finished in fourth place at the end of the recently completed 2022-23 Qatar Stars League season. The club will participate in the 2023-24 AFC Champions League starting with a Playoff Round duel against Uzbek club Navbahor Namangan.
