Transfer Roundup: Kwadwo Opoku, Youssouph Badji complete moves to new clubs

The offseason transfer window continues to move along with several African players joining new clubs over the past week. Below are several transfers completed over the past week:

Ghanaian forward Kwadwo “Mahala” Opoku completed a move within Major League Soccer that will take him from the United States to Canada after CF Montréal acquired the versatile attacker. Montréal paid $1,750,000 of General Allocation Money (GAM) for the services of Opoku to Los Angeles FC and the 21-year-old who was called up to Ghana’s under-23 national team for the ongoing U-23 Africa Cup of Nations but not released by LAFC. Opoku ends a three-and-a-half year spell with LAFC and figures to be a key player for his new club after producing 13 goals and 9 assists over 75 appearances in Los Angeles.

Another Ghanaian player on the move was 18-year-old starlet Christopher Bonsu Baah who is now a member of Belgian Pro League side KRC Genk after the club spent €5.2 million to acquire Baah from Norwegian club Sarpsborg. Baah was with Sarpsborg for only a little over three months after joining from Ghanaian club Shooting Stars but clearly impressed with 1 goal and 2 assists in 14 appearances during his brief time in Norway.

Senegalese striker Youssouph Badji completed a permanent transfer to Charleroi from fellow Belgian Pro League side Club Brugge after spending a season-and-a-half with the club. The 21-year-old will continue his development with Charleroi after scoring 5 goals in 38 appearances during his time on loan. Badji was a star with the Senegal under-20 team at the 2019 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations where he was the tournament’s co-leading scorer with 3 goals, also adding an assist in 5 games during Senegal’s run to the quarterfinals.

There were a few other transfers over the past week involving African players. 23-year-old Angola national team winger Milson completed a move from Russian Premier League club Nizhny Novgorod to Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv. Former Génération Foot graduate Lamine Gueye transferred permanently to French Ligue 2 side Paris FC from FC Metz after the Senegalese winger spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan to Paris. Finally, Ivorian midfielder Ousmane Doumbia joined Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire on loan from Swiss Super League side Lugano after a ten-year spell in Swiss football.
