Group A at the 2023 WAFU Zone B U-20 Boys Cup got underway on Friday in host nation Ivory Coast with capital city Abidjan the venue and both matches ended with surprising outcomes. The hosts kicked off the tournament hoping for a positive start but were upset by neighbors Burkina Faso with a 1-0 result in favor of The Stallions.
A late free kick from Zakaria Tinta took a dramatic deflection on its way into the goal to break the hearts of Ivorian supporters. The Young Elephants will need a victory to bounce back when their next match arrives against Niger on Monday.
In the later match on Friday a splendid free kick goal from Ghana’s Mustapha Yakubu gave the Black Satellites the lead against Niger in the first half. However in the final seconds the Ménas leveled in heartbreaking fashion for Ghanaian supporters and the full time whistle followed immediately for a draw that felt like a win to the Nigerien team.
