Egyptian Premier League: Al Ahly one point away from title, Zizo leads Zamalek past Future

Al Ahly continue to resemble a bulldozer in the Egyptian Premier League and next in their path on Saturday was Al Ittihad, who fell by a 2-0 score at home in Alexandria to become the latest victim. Both goals were scored in the opening fifteen minutes for Ahly with experienced left back Ali Maâloul finishing from the penalty spot in the 10th minute after Hussein El Shahat was tripped up.

Ahly’s other two regular attackers combined to double the lead three minutes later. Midfielder Mohamed Fakhri intercepted a poorly executed Ittihad throw-in and played the ball down the right wing to Percy Tau where the South African crossed for Kahraba to finish his 12th goal in 24 appearances across all competitions. Ahly now only need one more point from their final five matches to add to their record of 42 Egyptian Premier League titles.

In Saturday’s later match, Zamalek continued their fine form with a superb 3-2 comeback victory at Future FC to leap past their opponents into third place. Nasser Maher’s goal for Future inside the opening five minutes was followed by a fine strike from Ahmed Atef in the 25th minute.

However it was Zamalek talisman Zizo who brought The White Knights back into the match with a curling effort in first half stoppage time. Just before halftime Nasser Mansy fired in after Future goalkeeper Mahmoud Genesh failed to deal with a Zizo corner kick and all the momentum was on Zamalek’s side leading into the second half. Zizo confirmed the victory for his club with a clever curling free kick in the 54th minute that caught Genesh cheating away from his near post.
