Four days after concluding their triumphant 2022-23 Egyptian Premier League title-winning campaign with a 0-0 draw against Al Masry, Al Ahly advanced to the quarterfinals of the Egypt Cup with a 2-0 victory over El Dakhleya on Sunday. Percy Tau and Mohamed Magdy “Afsha” scored the goals for Ahly who featured a strong lineup for the occasion. Ahly will face Al Masry once again in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
The first goal arrived towards the end of the first half with an excellent team movement from the Egyptian and African champions. Hussein El Shahat cut inside from the left wing and played the ball to Afsha who sent a perfect pass through to Tau for a guided finish past Dakhleya goalkeeper Mohamed Magdy. It was Tau’s tenth goal of the season.
Dakhleya, who managed to escape relegation from the Premier League two weeks ago with a dramatic victory at Aswan SC, produced a brave effort but their defeat was confirmed in second half stoppage time. A surging run from Afsha saw him win the ball off a Dakhleya defender on his way to the edge of the penalty area before finishing low past Magdy for his fifth goal of the season and first since late May.
