Tanzania Community Shield: Simba prevail in penalties after draw with rivals Yanga

In the first of what will be several high intensity matches between the two rivals, Simba SC came out on top over Young Africans SC in the first Kariakoo Derby of the season on Sunday in Tanzania’s 2023 Community Shield. The Reds defeated Yanga 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout after the teams played to a scoreless draw giving Simba a positive start to their 2023-24 campaign. In the Third Place match Azam FC defeated Singida Fountain Gate by a 2-0 score.

Young Africans created opportunities to take the lead but supporters of The Citizens were left dearly missing the goal scoring prowess of departed marksman Fiston Mayele who left for Egypt’s Pyramids FC. Clement Mzize had an excellent chance soon before halftime after getting behind the Simba defense but goalkeeper Ally Salim was up to the challenge with an excellent save. Yanga were also denied apparent goals in each half by the flag of the linesman as well.

Penalty kicks were needed and after both teams converted their opening spot kicks, a string of four consecutive failures followed. Former Rayon Sports attacker Leandre Willy Essomba Onana put an end to the stretch of missed kicks by converting Simba’s fourth attempt and once Salim saved the next Yanga kick the stage was set. Congolese forward Jean Baleke fired low past Yanga keeper Djigui Diarra to confirm victory for Simba and spark the celebrations.

Highlights of the match are followed by the full penalty kick shootout as well as highlights from the Third Place match won by Azam FC.
