Ligi Kuu Tanzania Bara: Young Africans and Azam enjoy winning return to league play

Two of Tanzania’s participants in CAF interclub competitions over the weekend faced little rest before returning to action in their domestic league on Monday and Tuesday. There were few effects shown by Azam FC and defending Tanzanian champions Young Africans as both clubs earned decisive victories at home.

Young Africans had an easy time with Djiboutian minnows ASAS over the weekend in CAF Champions League play and head coach Miguel Ángel Gamondi had a good opportunity to rotate his squad between continental and domestic play. Yanga got off to a bit of a slow start on Tuesday against Army side JKT but proceeded to dominate the second half after Stephane Aziz Ki opened the scoring just before halftime. Zambian attacker Kennedy Musonda doubled the lead in the 54th minute before goals from new arrivals Kouassi Attohoula (from ASEC Mimosas) and Maxi Nzengeli (from DR Congo’s AS Maniema Union) completed the thrashing.

Azam suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Ethiopia’s Bahir Dar Kenema on penalty kicks to cut short their CAF Confederation Cup campaign and the Ice Cream Makers only had three days to lick their wounds. However they bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Prisons FC on Monday. Zimbabwean striker Prince Dube continued his hot run of form with the opening goal and a cross to set up Iddy Seleman Nado for Azam’s second goal.

Yanga and Azam join Simba as the three teams with six points through two matches. Highlights from both victories are below following the list of results.
