Senegal domestic-based national team manager Pape Thiaw announced his list of 23 players over the weekend that will represent the reigning African champions at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to start on January 11 in host country Algeria. Casa Sports, winners of the double in Senegalese football last season, have three players in Thiaw’s squad while famous club Génération Foot leads the way with six representatives in the team. Teungueth FC will send five of their players to the competition and two players from another top side, ASC Jaraaf, will be in Algeria as well.
Senegal will take part in their first CHAN finals since their last appearance in 2011, a campaign that ended at the group stage. Club football in the country continues to grow in stature with Teungueth FC’s respectable showing at the 2020-21 CAF Champions League group stage a recent highlight. Led by towering Casa Sports goalkeeper Alioune Badara Faty, Senegal will be expecting a finish similar to their fourth place performance at the 2009 CHAN in Ivory Coast with high expectations for the team.
