Fourth placed Alexandria-based club Smouha have had themselves a strong season and looked to be giving defending Egyptian Premier League champions Al Ahly a good challenge in the first half at home, but it all unraveled in a major way at the end of the first half as they fell 0-4 to a Ahly side that found their finishing boots. Mohamed Sherif opened the scoring in the 40th minute and that started a meltdown for the hosts at the end of the first half as Sherif’s goal marked the beginning of three goals in quick succession for the visitors, who suddenly were up 3-0 by halftime before Smouha knew what had happened to them.
Hussein El Shahat continued his return to form with a third goal in three matches by turning in a cross from Tunisian left back Ali Maâloul, who followed up El Shahat’s goal by tallying the third goal in the 45th minute from the penalty spot. Sherif finished the scoring with his second in the second half and Ahly had themselves a decisive victory to boost momentum as the CAF Champions League final approaches against Kaizer Chiefs. With six games still to make up on Zamalek, Ahly trail their rivals by 16 points but hope remains for them to make up the gap.
