WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFIERS: Premier League’s stance, rancour over Balogun delay Eagles’ list

Nigeria national team manager Gernot Rohr was set to announce the Super Eagles squad for their FIFA World Cup qualifying matches coming up in September, but in news similar to Egypt’s struggle to call up Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah, Rohr has been unable to confirm the availability of UK-based players such as Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo of Scottish titans Rangers FC. This Day reports that Nigeria may not only have issues bringing in its large UK contingent, but also players based in Italy, which would include star forward Victor Osimhen. Nigeria’s roster announcement will continue to be delayed as the Super Eagles join the list of African national teams appealing to international footballing authorities for the release of their players.

Among the players whose call up has been confirmed is FC Lorient star Terem Moffi, who continues to display his abilities in France’s Ligue 1 as the 22-year-old looks to build upon his June debut for the Super Eagles against Cameroon.
