Algeria joins Egypt in filing complaints following bitter WC playoff defeats; Algerian federation president resigns

Algeria are still reeling after a devastating World Cup qualifying playoff defeat to Cameroon where Karl Toko Ekambi’s last gasp strike sealed a path to Qatar for the Indomitable Lions via away goals. Following the match, the Algerian Football Federation filed a formal complaint to FIFA in an attempt to have the second leg replayed, labelling the refereeing of Gambian official Bakary Gassama as “scandalous” and demanding an investigation from the world footballing body. In the aftermath, the federation president Charaf-eddine Amara resigned with vice president Mohamed Maouche taking over on an interim basis.

The complaints of the Fennecs center around the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), where they feel that Cameroon’s opening goal from Eric Choupo-Moting should have been disallowed due to a perceived foul on goalkeeper Raïs M’Bolhi. Islam Slimani’s disallowed goal in extra time is also a point of contention after it was judged that the ball went off his arm in the 98th minute. KingFut has more on the complaints of the Algerians in the link below.
