Gambian referee remains public enemy number one in Algeria with his officiating decisions from the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff second leg between Cameroon and Algeria continuing to be reviled by Algerian supporters. After an appeal to FIFA by the Algerian federation was rejected, Gassama spoke out to media in his home country and remained firm about the calls he made. “If they win you are the good referee and if they lose they label you as the bad referee,” said Gassama as he acknowledged that dealing with criticism is a part of being an official.
