Toko Ekambi jeered by Lyon supporters in fallout from Algeria-Cameroon qualifier

Cameroon national team striker Karl Toko Ekambi had to deal with supporters of his own club jeering him over the weekend as he tallied a goal and assist in Olympique Lyon’s 5-2 Ligue 1 victory over Montpellier. After scoring to put his side up 4-2 in the 68th minute, the Cameroonian celebrated by motioning for those jeering to be quiet and from then on he was whistled every time he touched the ball.

Toko Ekambi went on to assist Lyon’s 5th goal but the controversy did not stop with the full time whistle. The speculation over the response of the supporters has ranged from Algerian supporters of the club taking their frustrations out at the forward due to his scoring of the winning goal in Cameroon’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory to simply a matter of Toko Ekambi responding to sustained criticism of the club’s lackluster performance this season. More on the controversy is below with video of Toko Ekambi’s contributions and response from Saturday’s match.
