Hector Cuper stays on as DR Congo manager for 2023 AFCON qualifying campaign

After it appeared that Hector Cuper’s reign as manager of the Democratic Republic of Congo national team was coming to an end following the Leopards’ elimination from 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, the Argentinean will stay on for the team’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Cuper’s contract was originally built around the goal of making it to Qatar 2022 but after a period of deliberation, his contract has been activated to run until 2023.

Cuper reflected to the press on DR Congo’s aggregate defeat in the World Cup playoff stage to Morocco where his team lost 5-2 over two games, stating that his team did many things well while pledging to correct the mistakes that resulted in the Leopards’ 4-1 second leg defeat and elimination in Casablanca. Despite offers from other national teams, Cuper believes he can help the Leopards progress to greater heights after speaking with the leadership of the Congolese Association Football Federation (FECOFA).
