Egypt national team manager Ehab Galal added seven players from 2021-22 CAF Champions League finalists Al Ahly as he announced his final squad for the Pharaohs’ opening 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Guinea and Ethiopia. Mohamed El Shenawy, Yasser Ibrahim, Ayman Ashraf, Hamdi Fathi, Amr El Solia, Mohamed Abdelmonem, and Mohamed ‘Afsha’ Magdi were all added from Ahly to complete the squad that includes European-based stars such as Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Elneny and Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet”.
New faces in the squad include a few players who have impressed in the Egyptian Premier League this season such as Future FC forward Ahmed Atef and attacking midfielder Ahmed Hamdy of CF Montréal in Major League Soccer. Veteran center back Ahmed Hegazy is also back in the squad after injuries kept him out for a spell and Yeni Malatyaspor left back Karim Hafez is back after a long spell out of the team.
