“The better team was the one that lost tonight”- Ahly manager Mosimane on CAFCL final

Al Ahly’s dismay at the site chosen for the 2021-22 CAF Champions League final in the lead up to the match carried over after the Egyptian giants were defeated 2-0 by Wydad AC on Monday evening in Casablanca with manager Pitso Mosimane emphasizing the disadvantage his team faced competing in front of a partisan crowd. The crowd was decidedly pro-Wydad at a match that designed to be played in front at a neutral venue after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) switched the CAFCL final format from a two-legged tie to one match in the 2019-20 season.

Mosimane lashed out at critics of his lineup selection and particularly at the circumstances of the final, stating that “I do not know how anyone can say that the CAF Champions League final was well organised. I think the Moroccans are the only ones who said that.” The South African coach summed up the feelings of Al Ahly management and its supporters following the frustrating encounter as Ahly were unable to capture a third straight CAFCL title, leaving Wydad to represent Africa at the next FIFA Club World Cup.
