Egypt Cup: Al Masry and Al Ahly defeat second-tier opposition

Ahead of Al Ahly’s return to Egyptian Premier League play, a heavily rotated side secured a 1-0 victory in their Egypt Cup matchup against second-tier side Al Masry Salloum on Sunday. Ahmed Abdelkader scored the match’s lone goal in the 59th minute after collecting a cross from Mohamed Hany and finishing past the Salloum goalkeeper. Several regular starters missed out on the match due to international duty as well as Hamdy Fathi, Mohamed Abdelmonem, Ali Lotfy, Luis Miquissone, and Walid Soliman but Ahly were able to advance to the Round of 16.

In the earlier match on Sunday, financially troubled Egyptian Premier League club Al Masry came back to rally from a deficit in the final twenty minutes of their 2-1 victory over El Mansoura. The second division side took the lead in the 58th minute when Ahmed Abdelaal converted a penalty kick following a Video Assistant Referee review that awarded Mansoura with the spot kick. However, a Mohamed Grendo penalty kick leveled the match in the 73rd minute before former Pyramids FC and Al Ahly midfielder Ahmed El Sheikh provided the winner in the 82nd minute.

Video of the goals from both of Sunday’s matches are below.

Al Ahly 1-0 Salloum

Al Masry 2-1 El Mansoura
