Nigerian 21-year-old midfielder Raphael Onyedika of FC Midtjylland was honored for an excellent first season in Denmark’s top flight with the Superliga Young Player of the Year award this week. Onyedika, a deep lying central midfielder, made 48 appearances and scored four goals for Midtjylland this season in Superliga play as well as Danish Cup and all three UEFA club competitions (Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League). The young talent was promoted to a starting role after countryman Frank Onyeka made his big money move to English Premier League side Brentford last summer.
Onyedika joined Midtjylland in 2019 from Nigerian club FC Ebedei, a connection that has seen the Ogun State club provide multiple young talents like Onyeka as well as striker Paul Onuachu who have found success at Midtjylland before moving on to bigger clubs. The native of Imo State spent last season on loan at FC Fredericia in the Danish second tier, gaining valuable experience before having his big 2021-22 season.
