George Boateng leaves Aston Villa to focus on assistant coach duties with Ghana at 2022 World Cup

After three months of combining coaching duties with the Ghana national team and English Premier League club Aston Villa’s under-23 side, George Boateng announced his departure from Villa to focus on his duties with the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Boateng joined Aston Villa in 2019 to coach with the under-18 and under-23 sides before joining the coaching staff of Ghana senior national team manager Otto Addo in May 2022. The 46-year-old posted on his Instagram account: “Leaving Aston Villa after three wonderful seasons was not an easy decision but having the opportunity to coach my country at the World Cup was too good to turn down.”

Boateng, born in Ghana, played his international football for the Netherlands where he began his professional career and moved as a youngster. He made 383 English Premier League appearances for Coventry City, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Hull City after succeeding at prominent Dutch club Feyenoord in Rotterdam.
