COSAFA U-20 Championship: Mozambique and Comoros move top of Group B & C

Groups B and C completed their second round of fixtures on Monday at the 2022 COSAFA U-20 Championship and there were a couple of surprises in store as Comoros and Mozambique leaped to the top of their groups following upset victories. Comoros are on the verge of completing a historic achievement after winning their second straight match with a 2-0 victory over Malawi. Yakine Saïd and Samuel Betombo scored the goals for Les Coelacanthes, who will face South Africa with a draw or defeat securing passage to the semifinals out of Group C. South Africa scored four goals in the second half to defeat Namibia and give themselves an opportunity to steal top spot on the final day.

In Group B an all-Lusophone matchup revealed the leader of the group as Mozambique surprised Angola 1-0. Chaimito Alfandega scored the game’s only goal in the second half on Mozambique’s only shot on target all match, helping the young Mambas reverse the result seen between the teams in the 2019 edition. All Mozambique need to do is draw or defeat Lesotho, who kept their faint semifinal hopes alive with a late winner in a 1-0 victory over Seychelles.
