FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Morocco and Nigeria open up competition with defeats

The 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup got started in India on Tuesday with two of Africa’s representatives in action. Up first was North Africa’s first ever representatives at the competition, Morocco, who put in a fighting effort against Brazil but could not overcome a poor start in their 1-0 Group A defeat. Djennah Cherif came close to opening the scoring in the opening minute when her volley from distance was kept out by goalkeeper Leilane but soon after Brazilian star forward Jhonson fired in the game’s only goal when she was played in behind the Moroccan defense.

Later it was Nigeria’s turn to open their tournament with a matchup against Germany in Group B, with the Flamingoes getting off to a dream start when Miracle Usani struck a low free kick in to give her team the lead on the half hour mark. However, the German side fought back after the halftime break. Svea Stoldt struck before five minutes had elapsed in the second half and Mara Alber finished off the comeback in the 61st minute.

Morocco will face hosts India next while Nigeria are set for a matchup against New Zealand. Highlights from both of Tuesday’s games are below.

Highlights

Germany 2-1 Nigeria

Brazil 1-0 Morocco
