Semifinal field complete at CAFWCL after Bayelsa Queens join Sundowns to advance out of Group B

Nigerian club Bayelsa Queens joined Group B winners Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in advancing to the semifinals of the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League on Sunday, defeating Egypt’s Wadi Degla to secure second place in the group. Juliet Sunday scored the opener in the 6th minute for a victory that contained little suspense thanks to Bayelsa’s dominance. Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies finished their group stage with a perfect record by dispatching Congolese side TP Mazembe 4-0 with qualification for the semifinals already secure.

Sunday opened Bayelsa’s account inside the opening ten minutes when left back Miracle Joseph’s shot was spilled right into the path of Sunday for an easy tap-in. Outside of testing Bayelsa goalkeeper Ange Bawou with a long range shot in the 18th minute the Nigerian club dominated proceedings and doubled their lead soon after halftime after Mercy Itimi fired in when the Wadi Degla defense failed to clear a cross from the right wing. Itimi wrapped up the scoring for Bayelsa with an excellent long range effort that snuck inside the post.

A strong first half helped Sundowns to a comfortably victory against Mazembe. Zanele Nhlapo converted from the penalty spot in the 19th minute following a foul in the penalty area. Melinda Kgadiete set up Lelona Daweti for her fourth goal of the competition to double the lead soon before halftime. Mazembe showed more promising signs after the halftime break but were no match for the reigning champions, who went up 3-0 before fifty minutes were up through Kgadiete. Gabonnelwe Kekana completed the rout for Sundowns who will face Tanzania’s Simba Queens in the semifinals on Wednesday.
