Uganda coach Sredojević reveals squad and preparation plans for CHAN

Uganda national team coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojević named his list of 25 players over the weekend who will represent the Cranes at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament in Algeria as well as his team’s preparation schedule. The Cranes departed Kampala on Sunday for Tunisia where they will continue training for the competition and play three friendly matches against unnamed opposition before leaving for neighboring Algeria. Uganda will be participating at their sixth CHAN but may be in the competition’s “Group of Death” with difficult encounters against Group B opponents Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Ivory Coast.

The Uganda squad features eleven players from current Ugandan champions Vipers SC, who will be the first Ugandan club to participate in the CAF Champions League group stage since KCCA FC in 2018 when they begin Group C play against Raja Casablanca in February. Vipers attackers Bright Anukani, Milton Karisa, Ibrahim Orit and Najib Yiga are all candidates to play a major role for the Cranes in Algeria while many eyes will be on heralded 17-year-old attacking prospect Travis Mutyaba of SC Villa to see if he can live up to expected hype.

Question marks for the Ugandan team will be at the goalkeeper position and in the defense where the Cranes are in need of domestic-based players to show their quality. However, if Micho can find a decent defensive unit during Uganda’s preparations he has several technically skilled players in the midfield like former SuperSport United midfielder Moses Waiswa as well as Karim Watambala and Marvin Youngman of Vipers.

More on the Cranes is further below following the confirmed squad list.
