The Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted its draw for the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday evening in Cairo, Egypt and there are plenty of interesting matchups. The CAF Champions League quarterfinals will start with the first leg matches on April 21 and April 22 while the Confederation Cup begins its quarterfinal stage with its first legs taking place on April 23.
The CAF Champions League quarterfinals will feature a rematch from last season at this stage when ten-time winners Al Ahly of Egypt clash with Morocco’s Raja CA, who made it through the group stage with an undefeated record. Tanzania’s Simba SC will take on defending champions Wydad AC of Morocco in an intriguing matchup. Algerian champions CR Belouizdad are one of two teams in the quarterfinals along with Simba SC who have yet to win the Champions League trophy and they face a massive challenge against South African top club Mamelodi Sundowns. Tunisian champions Espérance ST face JS Kabylie of Algeria who surprised the experts to reach this stage.
In the Confederation Cup draw, two contenders were drawn against each other with Algeria’s USM Alger set to face ASFAR Club of Morocco. Pyramids FC of Egypt and surprise team Marumo Gallants from South Africa will be an interesting matchup with Pyramids eager to make the breakthrough and finally win their first trophy after being runners-up in the 2019-20 edition. Tunisia’s US Monastir face Ivorian champions ASEC Mimosas and Rivers United of Nigeria take on another serious candidate to win the competition in Tanzania’s Young Africans SC.
