Egyptian Premier League: Al Ahly dominate Ghazl El Mahalla, Pyramids miss opportunity at Arab Contractors

Supporters of Al Ahly were relieved when their club got the victory they needed last weekend to qualify for the CAF Champions League quarterfinals but there continues to be no stress in the Egyptian Premier League. Ahly had an easy time on Wednesday during their 3-0 victory at home over Ghazl El Mahalla with the visitors posing little threat to the goal of the hosts. Ahly are now five points clear of second place Future FC and still have two matches to make up on their closest challengers.

The attack was not very efficient despite Ahly’s dominance but left back Ali Maâloul made the difference for the hosts. A free kick from the Tunisia national team left back was flicked into his own net by Mahalla defender Mostafa El Aash to give Ahly the lead shortly before halftime. In the second half it was a penalty kick from Maâloul in the 58th minute that put the league leaders out of reach following a hand ball in the penalty area. Mohamed Sherif scored Ahly’s third for the inconsistent striker’s sixth league goal of the campaign.

In the other match, third placed Pyramids FC fell further behind the pace with a 0-0 draw at Arab Contractors. The visitors controlled the match but after a hand ball was called on Arab Contractors defender Farouk Kaboré in his penalty area, Mostafa Fathi sent his spot kick over the goal in the 32nd minute. The frustration continued for Pyramids whose failure to score leaves them seven points behind Al Ahly.

Highlights from Al Ahly’s victory are below.
