Arab Club Champions Cup: Tunisia’s US Monastir secure comfortable first leg victory

Tunisian club US Monastir are expected to progress to the second qualifying stage of the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup following a dominant 4-0 first leg victory over Yemen’s Fahman SCC on Wednesday. The first leg of the opening qualifying stage tie, hosted by Fahman in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, saw a USM team take advantage of the circumstances to give themselves a large lead to defend when the teams meet again in Tunisia next week for the second leg.

Fahman did well to keep the match scoreless for most of the first half but could not threaten the Monastir goal. Malian forward Boubacar Traoré opened the scoring in the 40th minute when a pass into the Fahman penalty area was chested down for the January signing from Budapest Honved to fire into the goal.

Traoré scored his second goal around the hour mark when his left footed shot snuck under the Fahman goalkeeper. Two goals from Idris Al-Muhairisi in the final twenty minutes confirmed a decisive advantage for the Tunisian club who will face Bahrain’s Al-Muharraq if they are able to advance.

Highlights from the match are below.
