Botola Pro: No change at the top following victories for ASFAR and Wydad

The two title contenders in Morocco’s Botola Pro secured victories on Monday to maintain the current situation at the top of the table. Rabat club ASFAR remained the league leaders by one point following a 2-0 derby victory over local rivals FUS at the Stade Moulay Hassan. After a first half that featured few opportunities, the Royal Army club took the lead in the 55th minute when Anouar Tarkhatt scrambled in a rebound after a header from Hatim Essaoubi was saved by FUS goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid. Abdelfettah Hadraf’s deflected shot beat Benabid late on to give ASFAR the victory after defeats in the previous three meetings with their rivals.

Defending champions Wydad AC did not receive any help from Monday’s other match but kept close to ASFAR with a 2-0 victory over Moghreb Tétouan at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. Visitors MAT provided a serious challenge to the favorites in the first half but a beautiful curling effort from defender Amine Farhane gave Wydad the lead in the 57th minute. Left back Yahia Attiyat Allah curled a free kick just past MAT keeper Mohamed Saber to put WAC beyond reach. The reigning Moroccan and African club champions will now prepare for a duel with Egypt’s Al Ahly in the first leg of the 2022-23 CAF Champions League final on Sunday.
