Egyptian Premier League: Al Ahly defeat rivals Zamalek for the third time this season

The 2022-23 Egyptian Premier League title is settled but there were still plenty of bragging rights at stake when Al Ahly hosted eternal rivals Zamalek on Thursday. It was a familiar story for the season with Ahly dominating in a 4-1 victory to make it three wins from three matches against Zamalek this season. Four Premier League matches remain for Al Ahly who are undefeated while Zamalek are currently third on the table with one match to play.

It took just over a minute for Al Ahly to strike when a long ball fell for Hussein El Shahat to collect, who dribbled into the Zamalek penalty are before firing past goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi at his near post. A quickly taken free kick in the 36th minute allowed El Shahat room to dribble past a defender and drive another well taken shot past Sobhi from twenty yards out.

There was no doubt about the result when Ahly extended their advantage to three goals just before halftime. Left back Ali Maâloul had plenty of time to collect a pass from Percy Tau and send his shot just beyond the reach of Sobhi in first half stoppage time.

Zamalek improved their performance some after halftime. Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” was pushed over by Ahly midfielder Aliou Dieng after the hour mark and converted the resulting penalty kick following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. However the goal proved to be merely a consolation for Zamalek who conceded an additional goal to Ahly striker Mohamed Sherif late on.

Video of the goals are below.
