CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifying: CECAFA region kicks off the group stage

Qualifying for the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League is off and running in East Africa’s CECAFA region with nine clubs competing for one spot to represent the region at the final tournament. The group stage began in host city Kampala with CBE FC, Vihiga Queens, JKT Queens and local club Kampala Queens the winners from the opening fixtures in Groups A and B.

Kampala Queens had no issues beginning their Group A campaign on a positive note, defeating South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars by a 3-0 score at the FUFA Technical Centre. Uganda national team star Fazila Ikwaput tallied a hat-trick to lift her team to a routine victory. In the earlier match from Group A, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC scored twice in the second half to overcome a deficit and defeat Buja Queens of Burundi.

In Group B there were victories for clubs representing Kenya and Tanzania. Vihiga Queens of Kenya fell behind inside twenty minutes but stormed back for a 3-1 victory over Zanzibar’s New Generation FC. JKT Queens of Tanzania continued the trend of teams coming back from deficits, defeating Rwanda’s AS Kigali WFC 2-1 courtesy of second half goals.

Highlights from all four matches this weekend are below. Action will continue with two more matches from each group on Tuesday and Wednesday.
