CAF Women’s Champions League: Abidjan plays host as the group stage is drawn

Eight of Africa’s best club teams were drawn into two groups for the third edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League on Monday in Abidjan. Play will begin for the group stage on November 5 in host country Ivory Coast with the knockout stages taking place after the conclusion of the group stage on November 19. Two clubs will qualify for the semifinals from each group.

Host club Athlético FC d’Abidjan, who qualified by virtue of winning the top division of Ivorian women’s club football, were assigned to Group A and are joined by Moroccan club SC Casablanca and JKT Queens of Tanzania who won the regional qualifying competitions in North Africa (UNAF) and East Africa (CECAFA). The favorites to win the group and runners-up of the 2022 edition, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, complete the field in Group A.

A second Moroccan club, defending champions ASFAR Rabat, lead the field in Group B and qualified as the holders. WAFU-Zone A qualifying competition winners AS Mandé of Mali and WAFU-Zone B winners Ampem Darkoa of Ghana will compete for a spot in the semifinals along with Equatoguinean club Huracanes FC.
