After participating in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup over the weekend, Tanzania’s top clubs returned to league play on Wednesday and Thursday with Simba SC, Azam FC and defending champions Young Africans earning victories. Simba enjoyed a comfortable result over Coastal Union with Congolese striker Jean Baleke the star of a 3-0 victory, scoring all goals for a first half hat-trick.
Young Africans had a much more difficult time against Namungo who played well and defended admirably against the Citizens. However it was Mudathir Yahya who found the late winner for Yanga with a finish from an excellent cross provided by Ivorian attacking right back Kouassi Attohoula Yao. Both Yanga and Simba are perfect through three matches.
The most intriguing duel from the middle of the week featured Azam FC hosting ambitious club Singida Fountain Gate. Azam won by a 2-1 score courtesy of Iddy Nado who scored a crucial goal in second half stoppage time to snatch the points for the Ice Cream Makers. It has been a difficult campaign for Singida who bought numerous talented players from African club football as well as Dutch coach Hans van der Pluijm. With only two points from their three matches, experienced German coach Ernst Middendorp was brought in at the beginning of September after over fourteen years in South Africa.
