The long awaited draw for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is complete following Thursday evening’s draw ceremony in the Ivorian city of Abidjan. Six venues in five cities will host the 34th edition of the competition in the Ivory Coast and there are plenty of intriguing matches to look forward to. The group stage will proceed beginning on January 13 when hosts Ivory Coast face Guinea-Bissau to begin action in Group A.
An intriguing duel awaits in Group A between the hosts and Nigeria with both nations appearing heavy favorites to advance to the knockout stages. A competitive Group B is followed by what appears to be the “Group of Death”, Group C, which features defending African champions Senegal along with Cameroon, Guinea and The Gambia who impressed on their debut at the 2021 edition.
North African nations Algeria and Tunisia are the favorites to advance out of Group D and Group E. Algeria have a difficult match against Burkina Faso but are expected to advance out of a group that appears to be a favorable draw. Tunisia will face Mali and two nations from the COSAFA region, South Africa and Namibia. Finally, an intriguing Group F features 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinalists Morocco along with DR Congo, Zambia and Tanzania.
